Rethinking Our Relationship With the Sun: A Holistic Perspective on Sunlight, Skin Health, and Modern Living

The Radiance Edit.

There’s been a lot of conversation in recent years around the sun, sunscreen, and overall skin health - and I think it’s important to slow down and look at the bigger picture with wisdom, balance, and intention.

I believe the sun is one of the most powerful, life-giving forces we experience daily. It supports our circadian rhythm, influences our mood, and plays a key role in vitamin D production, which is essential for immune function, bone health, and overall wellness.

At the same time, as an esthetician, I also recognize what research has consistently shown: ultraviolet (UV) exposure can damage the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer over time. This is why I don’t believe in extremes - I believe in balance, education, and intentional living.

The Role of Sunlight in the Human Body

Sunlight is deeply connected to how our bodies function.

Morning light exposure helps regulate our circadian rhythm, which impacts sleep quality, hormone balance, energy levels, and even mental clarity. Natural light exposure has also been linked to improved mood and reduced symptoms of seasonal depression.

For thousands of years, humans lived much more in sync with natural light cycles spending more time outdoors and less time under artificial lighting. There is something important to be said about returning to a more grounded rhythm with nature.

However, it’s also important to remember that modern life is not the same as ancestral life. Today, we have different environmental exposures, different diets, and different lifestyle patterns that all influence how our skin and bodies respond to the sun.

Modern Lifestyle & Inflammation in the Body

One of the biggest shifts in today’s world is chronic inflammation.

Highly processed foods, artificial ingredients, environmental stressors, lack of sleep, and high stress lifestyles can all impact the body’s internal balance. When the body is inflamed or depleted, the skin barrier is often affected as well - showing up as sensitivity, breakouts, dullness, or slower healing.

This is why I always emphasize that skincare is never just topical. Skin health reflects internal health, lifestyle, and daily habits.

Rather than blaming one single factor, I believe in looking at the full picture of wellness.

Skin Barrier Health & Sun Exposure

Your skin barrier is your body’s first line of defense. When it is strong and healthy, it is better equipped to handle environmental stressors, including sun exposure.

However, when the barrier is compromised due to over-exfoliation, harsh products, stress, or inflammation - the skin becomes more reactive and vulnerable.

This is why intentional sun exposure matters.

I believe in:

  • Gradual, mindful sun exposure

  • Listening to your skin and your body

  • Supporting the skin barrier consistently

  • Prioritizing overall skin health rather than extremes

Sunscreen: Mineral-Based Protection & Skin Support

Sunscreen is an important part of a balanced approach to skin health, especially when it comes to protecting the skin during prolonged or intense sun exposure.

In my holistic practice, I personally prefer mineral-based sunscreens, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients sit on the surface of the skin and create a physical barrier that helps reflect UV rays, which many clients with sensitive, reactive, or compromised skin tend to tolerate more comfortably.

Mineral sunscreens also align well with a barrier-focused, microbiome-supportive approach to skincare, especially when the goal is to keep the skin calm, balanced, and resilient.

The most important factor, regardless of formulation, is consistent and adequate protection based on your lifestyle, environment, and skin needs. My focus is always on helping clients choose what supports their skin best while maintaining long-term skin health and balance.

A Balanced & Intentional Approach to the Sun

I don’t believe in fearing the sun, but I also don’t believe in underestimating its impact.

Instead, I believe in honoring it with wisdom:

  • Early morning sunlight for circadian rhythm support

  • Protective measures during peak UV hours

  • Nourishing the skin internally and externally

  • Avoiding extremes in either direction

A Faith-Based Reflection

From a faith perspective, I often think about how deeply intentional creation is. In Psalm 19, it says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” There is something powerful and purposeful about the design of the sun something that sustains life, rhythm, and order in creation.

To me, that points not to fear, but to stewardship.

Taking care of our bodies is a form of honoring what we’ve been given - and that includes how we interact with nature, nutrition, rest, and the environment around us.

Final Thoughts:

My belief is simple: the answer is rarely extremes.

Not fear of the sun.

Not rejection of protection.

But wisdom, balance, and intentional care of the body as a whole system.

Healthy skin is not just about what we put on it - it’s about how we live, what we consume, how we rest, and how we care for ourselves daily.

That is the foundation of everything I believe in as an esthetician.
